February 2008 - Torrance Police Department has selected PUMA II Digital Recorder to replace the current Department-issued tape recorders, worn by all sworn personnel and Services Officers assigned to field duty to keep TPD ahead of the technology curve. Such a tool will vastly improve the security of voice recordings attained in the field and maximizes their value by allowing these recordings to be centrally managed and electronically organized.

Staff reports completed in 2006-7 indicated that the microcassette recorders currently in use are expensive to maintain and are obsolete technology. Manufacturers are phasing out the microcassette recorder and moving solely toward digital format. Their recommendation was to upgrade to digital recorders. The most advantageous reason to consider digital recorders is that it enables in-field audio recordings to be centrally managed and organized electronically, rather than cassettes being stored with individual employees where the risk of losing crucial statements and evidence increases.

The PUMA Digital recorder for law enforcement was the focus of TPD because the Police Departments of Seal Beach, Westminster and Riverside had successfully employed it for over a year and have been pleased with its durability, increased security and cost saving. Also, the PUMA Digital recorders were field tested by TPD personnel and was the favorite among the three brands that were evaluated. Evaluating staff noted its ease of use and durability.

The Torrance Police Department has been proudly serving the community of Torrance for over 80 years, and currently employs 246 sworn police officers and 100 civilians.
